Football is more than a game. It can change people’s lives.
— Vincent Kompany, Manchester City and Belgium
Play is an innate aspect of life and acts as a natural resource for children to meet physical, intellectual and emotional challenges.
DUSC views the concept of play as inspiration to fulfill our mission of “Soccer for All"” and it is why we are introducing a new initiative to our community — Project P.L.A.Y.
Project P.L.A.Y. represents accessibility to soccer for all. Through our New York City Department of Education and U.S. Soccer Foundation program, our engagement with unique NY Public Schools, and the countless athletic scholarships we provide to the community, DUSC is chipping away at the barriers to entry for organized soccer.
Our ambitious goal is to increase:
Participation to 10,000 kids across NYC through
Learning the beautiful game
After school for
Youth in our urban communities
Downtown United Soccer Club, the U.S. Soccer Foundation, and the New York City Department of Education are partners in an effort to expand Soccer for Success through the city’s CHAMPS before and afterschool program. Through the partnership, as many as 2,000 students are engaged in Soccer for Success, the Foundation’s afterschool program offered free to participants and proven to establish healthy habits and deliver positive heath and youth development outcomes.
The collaboration also supports the Foundation’s It’s Everyone’s Game campaign to ensure children in underserved neighborhoods can benefit from all that the game of soccer has to offer. This program year, the Foundation is on track to engage 100,000 children nationwide in Soccer for Success.
NYC Public Schools
The DUSC Public School program is very similar to our past program called City in the Community. In 2018, the NYCFC grant that was funding City in the Community expired; however, DUSC decided to continue to fund and deliver free after-school soccer to Public School students at P.S. 20 and P.S. 134. From 3pm-5pm, our coaches provide after-school classes that spread the love of soccer as well as educate students on a healthy lifestyle. Between the two locations, DUSC serves over 260 kids.
Our Coaches not only share the joy of soccer with new players to the game, but also the power of mindfulness towards a healthy lifestyle. The program stands as a wonderful reminder to keep active and practice healthy habits.
City in the Community
City in the Community Soccer Program serves urban communities of New York City with after-school soccer programs that teach lessons on healthy eating habits and physical exercise. DUSC has been selected to deliver this as part of New York City FC’s Cityzens Giving program, a global fund that supports young leaders in cities around the world to tackle tough challenges affecting their communities, through the power of soccer.
