DUSC News

Alan Miles

Another weekend, another tournament, another hard fought - well earned championship for the DUSC U16 White team.  This past weekend, the U16s took to the road and traveled down to Manassas, Virginia for the Annandale Premier Cup.   There was a certain look in the boys' eyes this weekend.  They had a sense of confidence and desire and you can see it in their approach to the game in their warmups.  From the very first whistle until the final one, the boys never saw themselves down even one goal.  For the second consecutive weekend, the boys played on a Friday evening to get the tournament started.  Facing a talented Princeton team under the lights on a chilly and windy evening, the boys dominated all but 10 minutes of the game.  We came out strong and at ease, possessing the ball and attacking both wings.  We nearly took a lead early in the game but a handful of our efforts missed the net by ever so slim of margins.  We did manage to take the lead when Maxi Ojeda dribbled towards the top of the box and then slotted a ball in between two defenders and into the run of Oliver Streitz.  Streitz, with no one between him and the goalie, calmly placed the ball into the side of the net.  Entering halftime, I stated to the the boys a couple of things they needed to be weary of.  They needed to be aware that the game was far from over, be ready for a sudden push by Princeton and it was imperative that we put our chances away in the second half.  The initial 10 minutes of the second half was what I envisioned could happen.  Princeton came out strong, came out pressuring and took control of the game. At the nine minute mark, they earned a free kick at 20 yard line and with the wind at their backs, Princeton took a sharp shot that entered the upper right side netting tying the game up at 1-1.  After their goal, with strong play from Nicholas and Nathaniel Brown, we quickly took control of the game again and they never formed another threat and the game ended as a draw; one with which we felt like it was a loss.  The next day, determined to make up for the loss of those two additional points in the standings, we put the game away almost before it had even started.    Playing SC Waukesha, a premier squad that trekked down from Wisconsin, Jonathan Jaramillo found himself in front of the goal twice in the first 10 minutes on passes from Ojeda and Kevin Rodriguez.  On both occasions he easily avoided the goalie's outreached arms and slotted the ball into the back of the net.  We did not stop there as Ojeda again set up Streitz only just a couple minutes later to make the game 3-0.  SC Waukesha received a free kick on a favorable call right before the end of the first half.  On a thunder of a strike just out of the reach of Ziggy Camejo, they made the game much more reachable going into halftime 3-1.   The boys would not let SC Waukesha gain any momentum and actually completely took the air out of their sales on what i feel was the goal of the tournament.  Benjamin Hicks, playing right fullback, calmly received the ball in our own half and without hesitation sent an absolute beauty of a long ball diagonally across the field into the run of Oscar Estrada.  Estrada, without any sense of doubt, simply chipped the goalie and the ball entered the goal making the score 4-1 and completing the scoring for the match.  On Sunday, we played an early game against a very physical and talented Baltimore Bays side.  Once again, we found ourselves up early in the game when Chris Schrum headed in a corner kick by Jaramillo, making the score 1-0 five minutes in.  From that point on, it was not a pretty game and an extremely physical game but we found ourselves advancing to the finals for a consecutive weekend as the game ended with that lone goal.  Playing with a couple key players missing from the lineup and about to play their fourth game of the weekend, you can see that the boys were very tired and did not have much more in their tanks.  However, if you have ever witnessed one of our practice sessions, you would know that we stress that whenever you hit that wall where you are tired at practice - that is exactly when you need to push yourself that extra little bit for moments exactly like this.  We did exactly that playing against a Bayport team that is ranked highly in the state and the region.  You can see that both teams were absolutely exhausted so we simply kept possession of the ball as much as possible and waited for our moments to attack.  We took the lead 17 minutes in on an own goal and never looked back.   Bayport fought up until the final whistle.  They nearly tied the game up with one minute left if it had not been for an acrobatic save from Kenneth Caballero.   We were not going to be denied this championship.  The back line of Schrum, Hicks, Dan Sullivan, Anthony Mendez and Nicholas Brown had just limited four premier teams to two goals off of set pieces which is quite an accomplishment.  Overall an impressive weekend but simply another step in the right direction and another one of our many goals for this 2012 year.

U16 White Champions at MSC Tournament

It was a very successful weekend for the DUSC U16s.  However, at the outset of the tournament on Friday night, it did not seem like it was going to be.  With the game scheduled for Friday night at Tibbets Brook Park in Yonkers during rush hour, many of the boys arrived just in time for the start of the game and did not get a proper warm up.  On a cold night, that was certainly not ideal.  The game showed that in the first 5 minutes.  NYSC came out flying and pressured us from the outset and sure enough they scored a goal at the 4 minute mark.  It wasn't until the 10 minute mark that the boys settled down a bit and began to play their style of soccer.  NYSC still had the momentum though going into half time up 1-0.  The second half was a battle between the two sides with the match going back and forth.  NYSC went up 2-0 but our boys were relentless and refused to go down without a fight.  We immediately responded to the opponent's goal with a goal of our own from Oliver Streitz and like that momentum was now on our side.  As we continued to push, Jonathan Jaramillo found himself open at the top of the box with an open shot and calmly slotted the ball into the lower left corner to tie the game up at 2-2.  That would be the final result of the first game of the weekend.   The next day would provide another challenge.  Playing at a very windy Aviator field against the reigning state cup champs in Massapequa, the boys came out much more ready to play in the first half.  Moving the ball with ease against the wind and creating a handful of opportunities.  We went into half time up 1-0(on a goal by Jaramillo) confident that with the wind at our backs, we can put this game away and walk away with a W.  That was not the case.  Massapequa came out much more aggressive and took momentum for the entire half and erasing the 1-0 deficit and equalizing the score at 1-1.  The boys came away with the game feeling as they had just been defeated and looking at the next day's match against a very talented Beachside as a daunting task.  Only a win would push us through to the final round - the exact same situation that occurred to us at the Fort Dix showcase in the Fall.  Beachside had ended our chance at making the finals in the tournament.  The next day came and the boys believed they were up for the task at hand.  What occurred next was a tale of two completely different halves of soccer.  Beachside commenced the game pressuring us very aggressively and attacking with numbers.  At the 11 minute mark, Beachside was rewarded for the aggression with an open shot at the top of the box that made the game 1-0.  We did not want to give in and kept pushing to try and get the equalizer before the half but we were unsuccessful as Beachside simply kept stopping any of our attacks.  Then came halftime.  As the coach of these boys, I was happy at what i saw at halftime.  I did not see despair.  I did not see defeat nor panic.  I saw desire and determination.  Even i could not have foreseen what was about to happen.  The boys came out hungry for a win.  They moved the ball with precision and speed, creating opportunity after opportunity.  The Beachside goalkeeper was up to the task for the first handful of opportunities - including stopping breakaways from Jaramillo and Oscar Estrada.  With each opportunity, our confidence grew.  Once again, Jaramillo found himself open inside the box and he calmly slotted the ball into the lower right hand corner to tie the game up at 1-1.  We had taken over the momentum of the game completely and after getting fouled at the top of the box, Streitz stepped up to take the freekick.  He calmly drove the ball towards the net.  The ball took a deflection and like that, we now found ourselves up 2-1.  We did not look back until the final whistle which saw us advancing to the Finals.  The final game displayed that the many hours of practice and fitness sessions were paying off.  The game was never in question.  The boys sensed that this was their time to shine and played nearly a flawless game.  Moving the ball from side to side, keeping possession of the ball, and dominating the entire game.  We went on to win the final by a score of 3-0 on goals by Kevin Rodriguez, Harris Kolenovic, and an absolute beauty of goal by Charlie Morales. We walked off the field tired, bruised, cold and champions of the MSC tournament.

U13 White Champions at MSC Tournament

The boys had a very productive weekend. We won the tournament winning all four games. The attitude was positive all weekend and the boys brought a high level of energy to every game. You could see in their faces that they wanted to enjoy themselves on the pitch and did it by supporting each other, by taking shots, by playing tight defense, by talking to each other, but most importantly by knowing that they are a good team. Harris made great saves and really helped his defenders feel very secured. Kevin was a leader in the back with strong tackles every time. Vuk was great playing tight defense and his passes were on target every time. John was very helpful all weekend. His strong tackles made it really hard for the other teams to play. Aidan was strong on the right side and really helped us using the sides to come out the back. Joshua made really good tackles showing huge improvement on his defense. Liam was splendid on the left being physical and quick to come back. Erik dominated the midfield supporint his center mids every time. Mason was very strong and really helped un in the middle, keeping in mind he was playing with a bad knee. Pablo played  superb torunament playing center mid and defensive mid. Tommy's passes were always on target and his defense really helped us dominate the middle. J.P.'s goals and strong offense helped us score a lot of goals. Matthew's speed and strength were excellent all weekend. His left foot was giving other teams a very hard time. Ben's offense was excellent. His speed and support on defense helped our team on both ends of the field. Paul's dribbling skills was driving the opposition crazy. He made the other teams' defense work extra hard when he was on the field.

And Sergio was great at communicating with the families about times and field locations.
This is a very possitive way to start the spring season.

U12-U14 Season in Review

DUSC U12 SP: Fall Season 2011

DUSC Sao Paulo U12 Boys capped its fall season with a thrilling triumph at the 28th Annual Thanksgiving Tournament in Bethesda Maryland, prevailing over some of the highest ranked teams in the Maryland/District of Columbia/ Virginia region. That success made up for an earlier trip to Columbia, Maryland for a Columbus Day tournament that ended without silverware.

Sao Paulo spent most fall weekends scrimmaging against local New York or New Jersey clubs, either 8 v 8 or 11 v 11, slowly making the adjustment to a bigger field and more space. Sao Paulo also participated in the group stage of the NY Cup (11 v 11), but failed to
make the knockout round on goal differential. In the spring, Sao Paulo will join the Eastern Development Programs 11 v 11 League for U12s. We faced some of the teams a few weeks ago and an Indoor EDP Round-Robin, winning all three games, the last one a comeback victory from 2-0 down.

For many of the Sao Paulo players the highlight of the fall season was probably closer to home. Since we came together as a team, we’ve been blessed with great trainers and coaches. Coach Phil Martin is our newest helmsman. Training was demanding, innovative, fast-paced, and full of surprises. We can’t wait for spring.

DUSC U12 AM: Fall Season 2011

The newly formed U12 Athletico Mineiro team lead by Guillermo Lopez – aka Coach Memo – finished its first season together in a respectable 2nd place of the Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League’s A division (8v8). The season began with great energy as players and coach worked earnestly to become familiar with one another and form a unified team. Strong performances in league games were countered by challenges in tournament play. Undeterred, the team spoke in unison as it handily delivered the division leader their only loss at season’s end. Athletico looks forward to a strong showing in the upcoming season in league and in tournaments as it continues to amplify its cohesion, its skills and its competitive game.

DUSC U12 FL: Fall Season 2011

Flamengo is a new u12 team but we felt like we have been together forever. The team of 14 boys all were experienced ballers having come from DUSC last year, other travel clubs, or playing in their local leagues. The challenge was how do we bring all the kids together as a team? Under the leadership of Coach Segundo and given the spirited boys on the team, we easily accomplished the goal. The comradery is palpable and this showed on the field as well in the passing, execution of plays, and growth in the skills of all of the players. We played in the 8v8 B division of CJSL and finished in 4th but were tightly group with the two teams above us. We had a great tournament at Brooklyn Italians in the Elite division and came in 3rd with two strong victories. We also learned about sportsmanship along the way when we played a team that we lost to 9-1. This team ran up the score against all of its opponents despite no question that they would win the division - they finished the season with a 80-4 goal differential. The following week we ended up on the other side of this and were up 7-1 in our game. Rather than keep scoring, Segundo used the opportunity to have the kids try new positions and pass the ball. They understood it wasn't just about winning, but how you win that is important. We look forward to a positive winter and spring and continuing to develop great soccer players and equally great kids.

DUSC U13 White: Fall Season 2011

This past season the U 13 White participated in the EDP league. This was a very competitive league. The games were very challenging every weekend and no team was easy. For our team the transition to big fields and to playing 11 v 11 was not not easy. Last year we finished first on our league and we would score an average of five or more goals every game, which meant that the competition was weak and not very competitive. This season we faced teams that had been playing tough games every single weekend, so this made feel like we were playing catch up to the other teams who were already so used to that level of the competition. As the season went on we got better and better. We tried about three different formations always trying to figure out the best one that would fit our style of playing. Right before we went to the Maryland tournament we started using two defensive midfielders and two central midfielders which worked very well for us. Our team began to win more balls in the middle and our central midfielders looked more open to handle the ball. We were able to win the Maryland tournament and I think we won it because we were finally feeling comfortable as a team with a formation that fit us well. This season was great for the U13White . It taught us that  it takes a lot of work to be a good team. It taught us that there is plenty of good level competition outside of the CJSL and it taught us to believe and trust every single one of our team mates  ecauae each and very single of them helped us become a better team in the end.

DUSC U13 Blue: Fall Season 2011

The U13 Blue team played in the 11-a-side CJSL league for the first time and on top of all the challenges that meant, we had some new faces on the team with a bigger roster. Luckily, the team blended well and we were able to quickly start working on specific areas and more tactical practices.
We played the Columbus Day Tournament at Brooklyn Italians and did very well. We had great possession and greater number of passes in most games. For the first few full sided games, we performed very well. Although we lost the playoff game, the result was very positive and gave us confidence in our league games.
We also attended the Howell tournament where we faced teams with very different elements. We had good games and bad ones and it helped us realize where we really stood.
We were fortunate enough to take the title of the CJSL B West Division as well. We had lost only 1 game but outplayed our opponents in every game. We may have lacked finishing but our players were able to pass, combine and create goal scoring chances game after game. Towards the end of the season we focused on attacking which meant a step up from the beginning of the season. I was happy to see a progression in our practices that led in better attacking situations in our last games.
Overall, the season was positive, the team spirit high and I can say that we have a group of players that can also consider themselves friends. Our players are focused of their strengths and weaknesses and are committed to constant improvement.
We took another challenge which is moving to the CJSL A Division in the Spring. A new set of obstacles will keep testing them. We hope we can overcome them and keep learning.

DUSC U13 Gold: Fall Season 2011

DUSC u13 Gold started the season with a cracking four-nil win and went on to dominate their league. The team won four, only lost two and had by far the best goal difference in the league, with eighteen goals scored (80% more than the next closest team) and only eight goals conceded. The meanest defence in the league belonged to FC NY United, who only conceded six goals in the season -- notably three of those were to DUSC.

Of the two losses, one was a one-nil that the team lost on a free kick and the other game was five-four, a game which featured three free kick-related goals. As you can see, in open play the team was undefeated although playing “up” against other organization’s B teams.

The team pulled off this feat by moving and passing well and usually dominating possession through most of the players being more technically sound than the teams they were up against. The team also features some players not afraid to dribble past the opposition and set up goal scoring opportunities. Alex was the leading scorer with Jason (each scoring 5 goals) and then Teo close behind (4 goals),  Eyob led in assists (5 assists).

The team does have players of widely varying abilities and this can give their performances a schizophrenic nature. In the tournaments all their weaknesses were ruthlessly exposed by “A” teams playing at full tilt. At the Brooklyn Italians tournament they lost all three games, shipping 26 goals and scoring two. At the Howell tournament the competition was not quite as stiff, DUSC won one out of four (for their first tournament victory ever) and should have won a second.

All in all the team had a great season with many moments of excellence on the pitch, often dominating possession for long stretches with flair in attack and dogged defensive displays. Also of note was Max in goal, who is a much improved player from last season and now only needs to get the hang of stopping those pesky well placed free kicks.

Congratulations on winning the league, and doing so while having fun on the pitch!

DUSC U14 White:  Fall Season 2011

DUSC U14 White ushered in the fall season with a roster change, featuring twelve returning and four new players, plus  a new team coach, Oscar Cantu.  The team built upon its signature ball skills by focusing on a more structured attacking offense and pressuring team defense.  DUSC U14 White tested its skills in the Eastern Development Program league consisting of the top regional teams of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Eastern New York, and Connecticut.

The transformation was apparent as the team applied the tactics and techniques learned during the September and October practices to placed in each of its three fall tournaments entered:  semi-finalist in the Brooklyn Italian's Columbus Cup, champion in MAPS Cup, and finalist in the Bethesda Thanksgiving Invitational.  With the strong fall performance, DUSC U14 White has moved to a ranking of 7 in ENY and 27 in Region I, based on the GotSoccer ranking system.  DUSC U14 White will increase the competitive challenges by entering the Northeast Premier League, ENY State Cup, EDP league, MSC Kickoff tournament, and FC Delco Invitational.

U13 Gold - FCNY (3-1)

DUSC went into this game only needing a win or a draw to top the league. The game started with several minutes of scrappy midfield to and fro, with neither team penetrating to dangerous positions.
FCNY were actually the first to break through, attacking up the wing and getting off a shot that pinged off the outside of the upright, but that turned out to be the highpoint of their attack for the first half.
DUSC soon settled into an easy dominance with well-thought out passes and good forward movement that only lacked a killer instinct in the final third. Jack had the first attempt on goal with a strong shot, but straight to the goalie. Eyob hit the post a few seconds after and shot over the crossbar later. Evan tried but failed to beat the goalie at his near post and also landed a free kick in a beautiful spot that no one got on the end of. Santiago also had a shot that went wide.
All this attacking left DUSC a little exposed at the back occasionally, but  Brendan and Henry formed a good partnership in the centre of defence, covering well for each other. They were often stretched but never broken and Max had little to do in this half.
Alex replaced Jack on the wing and twenty minutes in opened the scoring with a strong shot from ten yards out, near the end line, that their goalie spilled into his net.
DUSC continued to attack, often building patiently from the back. The team was communicating well, passing well, moving well and pressing hard but still had to wait almost fifteen minutes for another goal. Finally Alex setup Marcus who shot to make it two-nil and that was the score at half time.
It was fortunate that DUSC had a two goal lead because the team that came out for the second half had a much harder time of it. It was not a pretty sight, there was a lot less coordinated movement
and a lot more hopeful hoofing of the ball upfield. No real chances were generated, the midfield went AWOL and DUSC no longer dominated  possession, their attack wilted from lack of service.
DUSC had lost to this team one-nil earlier in the season, on a free kick, and there was a palpable danger that they could fall on that sword again. The highpoint of the first fifteen minutes was Santi powerfully heading clear a free kick that looked destined for the goal. Twenty minutes in FCNY did score from a free kick. The ball flashed across the face of goal and a forward jammed it in to make it two-one. Two minutes later FCNY had another free kick chance but sent the ball harmlessly over the crossbar.
Brendan and Henry came on in midfield and the attack started to show a little more intent but was still somewhat uncoordinated, usually falling apart in the final third. Finally a post-corner melee allowed DUSC to add to their safety cushion. The ball wasnʼt cleared properly and fell to Antoni who picked out Leo who jabbed it in to make it three-one.
The last five minutes saw a few more DUSC chances, the closest of which was a Henry free kick that Eyob headed just over the top right corner.
When the whistle blew DUSC won the game and the league. Well done boys!

HARRISON, NJ (December 6th, 2011) – The New York Red Bulls today publicly announced the try out dates for the second phase of the winter Regional Development Schools (RDS).

For the first phase of try-outs, held in November, over 1500 players tried out for this exclusive program. Huge demand resulted in many try-outs being fully booked and closed for registration, weeks in advance. As competition for places on the RDS continues to grow, players interested in registering for the second phase of the winter sessions are advised to register as soon as possible, to avoid getting locked out.

The popular program returns to many of the same indoor locations throughout the tri-state area, featuring many standard training locations, as well as offering increased options for players interested in the goalkeeper, and Futbolinho curriculums.

All winter RDS locations offer 6 weeks of advanced, technical training, focusing specifically on individual techniques, and functions of the game. Accessible via try out only, each course provides an intensive and challenging environment unlike any other. Players that excel within the RDS will be selected to represent the Red Bull New York in showcase tournament play, and earn the opportunity to train with the full academy teams.

Featuring a low coaching ratio, some of the most highly qualified staff in the area, and an unrivaled end of season evaluation, the program is firmly entrenched as the area's ultimate training tool. Applications are encouraged from boys and girls aged 8 to 14, who have a strong travel soccer background, and are looking for a unique training environment to supplement their club schedule.

Applications are especially welcome from boys born in 1999, looking to enhance their chances of selection for next year’s Academy team. For the second year running, over 90% of players making the transition to the youngest full Academy team were direct recruits from the RDS, with the 1998 graduating class proving to be equally as competitive as the ‘96 and ‘97 classes before them.

To find out more, check a detailed schedule, and register for a free try out, visit the RDS website at www.redbullsacademy.com. The new and improved site features videos, testimonials, coaches’ biographies, and comprehensive overviews on the showcase tournament teams, Futbolinho, and goalkeeper programs.

Asphalt Green - U13 Gold (5-4)

The game started off with a lot of end-to-end play, but DUSC soon came to dominate possession and show much more attacking flair than Asphalt, getting off eight shots on target before Asphalt troubled our goalie at all.
The attacking was a good ensemble effort revolving around Evan and Eyob in the midfield, Alex and Leo on the wings and Teo up front. Several nice give and go moves between that cast created most of the chances with the strongest being a shot of Alexʼs.
Twenty five minutes in, Asphalt were awarded the softest of free kicks in a dangerous spot, just outside the DUSC penalty area. The kicker arced it in to make it one-nil to Asphalt.
That goal inaugurated a wobbly period for DUSC. First they got caught out on a counter-attack but Max deflected it out. Then bad distribution from the back and a lack of consistency in passing allowed Asphalt to start hanging around the edges of our final third and a few minutes of that led to Asphaltʼs second shot on target and second goal.
In the final minute of the half DUSC returned to their attacking ways. Teo dribbled through the centre and set up Evan with a chance to snatch one back but the goalie got to it.
The second half started with DUSC again demonstrating a lot of good approach play, often stringing five or six good forward-moving passes together, but again with no end result.
Ten minutes in Asphalt won a free kick on almost their first foray into the DUSC final third. Henry had his pocket picked but won the ball back, right on the edge of the penalty arc. It may or may not have been a foul but it was definitely another set piece and another goal for Asphalt. The ball sailed in just under the crossbar to make it three-nil.
The fight back got going in earnest a few minutes later. Henry got a strong shot off that the goalie spilled at the feet of Alex, who jabbed it in for DUSCʼs first goal.
A short while later, completely against the run of play, DUSC got caught on a counterattack up the left wing. Their winger cut in and got a shot off to the near post and Iʼm not quite sure how that got in but in it was to make it four-one. A few seconds later they almost got another. A defensive screw-up allowed Asphalt in on goal but Max came far out and covered it.
Within five minutes Alex made it four-two. He sped up the left wing, dribbled past two and then shot from the outside edge of the penalty area into the side-netting. Two minutes later Alex had his hat trick. This time Eyob centred to him, Alex then dodged one player and shot to make it four-three.
Alex had had such fun with speeding up the wing earlier that he tried the same trick a few more times. He eventually got tackled on the first attempt, but cracked one off the crossbar with the latter.
The ref was very whistle-happy, blowing for free kicks anytime anyone fell down, no matter what the circumstances, and he saw fit to award Asphalt yet another free kick. This time it was one third into DUSCʼs half, too far to score directly but the ball fell to an Asphalt player on the edge of the penalty box and he angled it in by the far post to put Asphalt two goals ahead again.
Three minutes from the end everyone on DUSC came up for a corner. Ivan attempted to chip the goalie and the rebound fell to Alex, who poked it in for his fourth goal of the half to make it five-four.
Iʼm afraid that was it. Asphalt were on the offensive for the last few minutes without generating any real shots, so DUSC lost by one goal. If that ref hadnʼt been so in love with his whistle DUSC would have won this one.
