DUSC went into this game only needing a win or a draw to top the league. The game started with several minutes of scrappy midfield to and fro, with neither team penetrating to dangerous positions.
FCNY were actually the first to break through, attacking up the wing and getting off a shot that pinged off the outside of the upright, but that turned out to be the highpoint of their attack for the first half.
DUSC soon settled into an easy dominance with well-thought out passes and good forward movement that only lacked a killer instinct in the final third. Jack had the first attempt on goal with a strong shot, but straight to the goalie. Eyob hit the post a few seconds after and shot over the crossbar later. Evan tried but failed to beat the goalie at his near post and also landed a free kick in a beautiful spot that no one got on the end of. Santiago also had a shot that went wide.
All this attacking left DUSC a little exposed at the back occasionally, but Brendan and Henry formed a good partnership in the centre of defence, covering well for each other. They were often stretched but never broken and Max had little to do in this half.
Alex replaced Jack on the wing and twenty minutes in opened the scoring with a strong shot from ten yards out, near the end line, that their goalie spilled into his net.
DUSC continued to attack, often building patiently from the back. The team was communicating well, passing well, moving well and pressing hard but still had to wait almost fifteen minutes for another goal. Finally Alex setup Marcus who shot to make it two-nil and that was the score at half time.
It was fortunate that DUSC had a two goal lead because the team that came out for the second half had a much harder time of it. It was not a pretty sight, there was a lot less coordinated movement
and a lot more hopeful hoofing of the ball upfield. No real chances were generated, the midfield went AWOL and DUSC no longer dominated possession, their attack wilted from lack of service.
DUSC had lost to this team one-nil earlier in the season, on a free kick, and there was a palpable danger that they could fall on that sword again. The highpoint of the first fifteen minutes was Santi powerfully heading clear a free kick that looked destined for the goal. Twenty minutes in FCNY did score from a free kick. The ball flashed across the face of goal and a forward jammed it in to make it two-one. Two minutes later FCNY had another free kick chance but sent the ball harmlessly over the crossbar.
Brendan and Henry came on in midfield and the attack started to show a little more intent but was still somewhat uncoordinated, usually falling apart in the final third. Finally a post-corner melee allowed DUSC to add to their safety cushion. The ball wasnʼt cleared properly and fell to Antoni who picked out Leo who jabbed it in to make it three-one.
The last five minutes saw a few more DUSC chances, the closest of which was a Henry free kick that Eyob headed just over the top right corner.
When the whistle blew DUSC won the game and the league. Well done boys!
