10 steps for coaches to build good relationships with young players:
- Encourage dreams but plan carefully, know what you want and keep expectations reasonable.
- Be the right role model - you are the most important example of the attitudes, standards & behavior that you are teaching.
- Help players build self-esteem through work & achievement.
- Make practice challenging productive & enjoyable.
- Share your knowledge whenever and however possible but be a good listener.
- Become a good observer of players' behavior.
- Sell not yell - allow players to take ownership of their own progress.
- Criticize sensitively and only the performance - never the person.
- Treat all matches as teaching & learning experiences; don't let your ego get involved.
- Parents are important to young players - make them part of the solution not the problem.

For week 3. there is no match report... But here is the league standings and also the golden boot table
Game 1
Team Webber Vs Team William Jenkins
Welcome back to the U9 Winter Tournament match reports.
The game had an even start in the first few minutes, both teams moved forward with the ball and created some good chances. Aidhan opened up the score board with a nice left foot finish.
Mario took advantage of a slip up from the keeper and tied the game, 1-1. Luke, who had a great game last week, had a fantastic start in this game as well, scoring a good goal that came from a corner kick and putting his team up 2-1. The match went on with many more goals and a few shots denied by great keepers and the post. Sawyer scored an amazing volley straight from a corner kick… Looked like something he learned from the Karate Kid. Both teams showed great skills and hunger to win the match, but in the end, Team Webber got the win. Radman took the golden boot with 7 goals in the match.
Goals:
Aidhan(5), Sawyer(3), Luke(1), Charles(1), James(7), Mario(1), James(7), Mario(1)
Final Score : Team Webber 10 vs Team William Jenkins 8
Game 2
Team Isaiah Vs Team Nacho
From the start, Team Nacho dominated the match, scoring quick goals and defending strongly with high pressure and playing aggressively. Captain Nacho scored a great goal from a corner kick. Tae was a nightmare for Team Isaiah`s defense. He seemed unstoppable and went on to score 8 goals! The keeper was having a tough time in the goal, but never put his head down and kept working hard to make saves. Second half started and Team Isaiah went into the field motivated to turn the game around.
John Anthony went on to score the first goal for his team, but it was a little too late. Sam scored a great header from a kick in from Jay. Team Nacho took the 3 points.
Great effort by team Isaiah, I can say they gave it their best in the pitch.
Tae took golden boot with 8 goals in the match.
Goals:
Isaiah(4), John Anthony(1), Nacho(3), Jay(2), Diego(1), Tae(8), Sam(1)
Final Score: Team Isaiah 5 vs Team Nacho 15
Game 3
Team Tessa Vs Team Joshua
The last match of the day was a very high scoring one. Leo opened up the score board for his team, quickly followed by Julian to make it 2-0. Brandon took a corner kick and Asher had a great volley, putting that ball away in the net. Edwin went on to have a volley as well but Mac, the keeper, denied him. Yves had a great header in front of the goal, but there was another amazing save by a keeper! This time it was Pietro who dove for the ball and held onto it. Team Joshua is up 8-7 with 10 minutes remaining. Ash scored the equalizer. 8-8. The last few minutes were very intense, Julian makes it 9-8 but only seconds later, Tessa tied it! Team Joshua went on to score 7 quick goals within 5 minutes, winning the game. They took the 3 points for the match.

The Winter Tournament for the U9`s kicked off Saturday with 3 really exciting matches. The kids seemed very eager to be back at the club after their vacation and they showed it in the matches.
1st Match- Team Webber vs Team Isaiah
Team Isaiah didn't waste any time, quickly scoring 4 goals in the first half, including a great header by Isaiah, assisted by a beautiful lob pass from Jayden. Team Webber kept trying really hard to score but their efforts were denied by the post and the keeper. Luke was very motivated to go up and attack and had a few good chances. First half ends with Team Isaiah comfortably in the lead.
Second half was a different story, Team Webber came out determined to score some goals and that's exactly what they did. Aidhan went on to score 7 goals and with 2 minutes remaining, Team Webber was up 9-8. After that, Jayden took the ball and passed to John Anthony to tie the game. 9-9 with less then a minute remaining when Aidhan found the net! GOAL!
Final score Team Webber 10. Team Isaiah 9
2nd Match - Team William vs Team Tessa
The game started and quickly Team William took possession of the ball. Though the Team William moved the ball around and created chances, they couldn't find the net. Team Tessa scored their first 3 goals from counter attacks, setting the score at 0-3 in the first ten minutes. Mac was in the goal for Team Tessa and he wasn't going to allow any ball to go in his goal. After a few attempts, Santo finally found the back of the net, though Team William still had a huge mountain to climb. Minutes before half time, Jesus went off with a light injury to his ankle and Joshua stepped in to help out. But Jesus recovered quickly and from half field, his strike on the ball scored a screamer! In the end, Team Tessa was too much for their opponents. Ethan went on to score a Hat-Trick and Brandon, who showed up late to the game, demonstrated some great skills and scored 5 goals.
Final score Team William 6. Team Tessa 10
3rd Match - Team Nacho vs Team Joshua
Last match of the day started off a bit slow. Both teams were not willing to risk much during the first half: Not much action to report. Their coach must be a genius because whatever he told them during the break changed the game completely in the second half. There was suddenly a lot of movement and action from both teams and lots of goals! William had a few great saves in the goal, looking a lot like Muslera. Julian went on to score 6 goals throughout the match. The ending was very exciting. 3 goals were scored in two minutes! Diego scored a Hat-trick including the equalizer (11-11) from half field! Pietri scored a smart one from a free kick, not wasting any time while the defenders were confused about how to get ready. But with 10 seconds remaining, William took a shot from out the box, Sam hit it with his knee and celebrated when he saw the ball hit the back of the net! After getting lost, Edwin finally found the soccer field and with about two minutes to play, still managed to score a goal.
A great day for the U9`s and the fans that came out to watch them play. Looking forward to a great winter season...

An article written by Jay Martin on the differences between the U17 American players and U17 Brazilian players.
It's important for young players learning the game to first master the basic techniques ahead of any emphasis on tactics. Small-sided games, lots of practice with the ball and an environment that supports and rewards good technique is critical.
"The Brazilians were comfortable with the ball. Their technique and first touch were superior. That allowed the players to focus on the tactics of the game."
"The Brazilians demonstrated sophistication in the attacking third that the American players did not. The Brazilian teams never settled for dumping the ball into the box. They would try to combine with teammates to get into the box. They demonstrated a “patient urgency” that allowed many more dangerous opportunities in the final third."

On Saturday 10/15/11 the U10 Academy played a scrimmage against Young Rock. After a long tournament the past weekend at the Brooklyn Italians tournament, it was nice to be home again.
The game consisted of an 8v8 game played informally with many subs done throughout the game. All DUSC players present had their turn in the big game and in the smaller 4v4 games. Every player tried different positions, some they know very well and others that by their characteristics, I knew they were not going to be very comfortable. The attitude of our players was quite remarkable as they always try their best when they are on the field. Some struggle to adjust to their "new" positions but seeing their minds processing this new environment is very promising.
The opponent was very physical and some even looked a few years older than the rest. Their strength was their shot but their passing was not as accurate. Although we struggled in offense dues to their player's size, we managed to create opportunities and even scored 2 goals.
Overall, it was a positive weekend and we all feel that our players are making progress week after week. We are also working on their concentration and team awareness. Players should always come to practices and games ready to play, this means with proper equipment and also mentally prepared to play soccer and not to just hang out with friends.
On training: "Footballers normally train for an hour and a half, but it doesn't mean they work for an hour and half. Some might be demonstrating a function while the others are watching. And then it's your turn. It's not how long you train, but what you put into it. If you train properly, 35 minutes a day might do. We built Liverpool's training on exhaustion and recovery with little areas of two-a-side, three-a-side and five-a-side in which you work like a boxer, twisting and turning. Training was based on basic skills, control, passing, vision, awareness"
Today, we scrimmaged NJSA 04 from New Jersey and I must admit the experience was very positive. The Coaching Staff, Kids and Parents from NJSA 04 were great all around. The Parents and Coaching Staff allowed their kids to play the game and express themselves through soccer and their kids had the desire to play the game, they actually tried to play good soccer and not just "kick and run" like we see at most tournaments at the youth level.
In my opinion, our DUSC U9s faced some very good competition this early into our season (only 2 weeks in) and I think they held themselves up very well against such competition. When the games were played amongst our own kids (We had 5 teams and NJSA had 1 team), I saw our players competing against one another in a very friendly manner, which put a smile on my face. It felt like they, our U9 players, understand that they are a group, a large group of 30 something kids and that they have to lookout for each while being competitive to make each other better players. I got that feeling by watching them today. It was a great first scrimmage for our U9s, the most important thing is not how many games we won against NJSA but that our U9s enjoyed themselves playing soccer with their teammates and also against the NJSA kids.
Last, I would like to thank our U9 Parents, for not pressuring our kids on the sidelines and allowing them to play and to make their own decisions on the field.
Mike
